About Me
I’m Harby-Bemmann, a filmmaker, anthropologist, and writer based between Germany and Egypt. My work lives at the intersection of storytelling, research, and activism—centered on themes like cross-cultural connection, women’s rights, and environmental justice.
Currently, I’m pursuing a PhD in Media Anthropology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences & Arts. My research, Visualizing the Nile for Future Life, explores how visual media—like games, comics, and graphic storytelling—can help children engage with water sustainability, particularly in the context of the Nile River in Aswan.
I hold a master’s in visual Anthropology, Media and Documentary Practices from the University of Münster and have directed several short films in Egypt. In 2023, I co-founded a media production company in Germany with René Bemmann. Our first essay film, The Last Letter to Nasser, received a Jury Special Mention at the Luxor African Film Festival.
I also write about memory, identity, and feminist history, and have co-authored Wings, Beyond the Borders (2023) and Grandmothers, the Richness of Memory (2024). Across all my projects, I see storytelling as a collaborative act—one that listens deeply, resists simplification, and imagines more just futures.
I work in Arabic, German, and English.
